Q: Who are you? Where are you from?

A: My name is Ilya. I was born in Moscow, moved to Boston in 2013 to get my graduate degree in Computer Science, fell in love with the city and decided to make it my home.

Q: What’s your background? What did you do before Modulate?

A: I founded two startups — a Bluetooth hardware company and a car rental marketplace for dealerships in Hawaii (where I lived for two years). Recently, I lead the product development of electric scooters and operations at Superpedestrian.

Q: Why are you joining Modulate?

A: Company culture built on transparency and trust deeply resonates with me. I’m excited to join the journey of bringing cutting-edge AI to real problems.

Q: What’s your ideal work environment? Any special strategies you use to stay effective?

A: I enjoy fast-paced environments where everyone feels part of the team. I am a proponent of the Extreme Ownership approach, where no one thinks “it’s not my job”.

Q: Who are you outside of work?

A: Outside of work, I spend most of my time with my wife and two kids. I enjoy sports — playing volleyball and soccer with local teams, as well as chess online. I’m also a fan of Formula 1 and the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning.

Q: What’s something you’re great at that few people realize?

A: I play the old-fashioned card game “Preferans” really well.

Q: Leave us with a fun tidbit - a favorite joke, a story from your past, an obscure riddle, whatever you like!

A: Platypus are egg-laying mammals (like they are not weird enough).
